Last year I learned about using DNA analysis for genealogical research while attending a local Genealogical Society meeting. Since I was very busy at the time I shoved the idea to the back of my brain for later ponderance. So finally, here I am a year later thinking about it again. I've been doing some research and have found that there are many (in the hundreds) of surname DNA studies going on right now. Talk about exciting! That got me charged up again about getting a study going for the WRIGHT surname. So let me share with you what I have found out and how you can participate. Modern advances in genetics allow us to study the Y-Chromosome to determine scientifically whether or not men with the same surname descend from a common male ancestor. This is possible because fathers pass their Y-Chromosomes, or "DNA fingerprints," down to their sons with little (if any) variation, from gneration to generation. Therefore, men with identical, or near identical DNA fingerprints (some minor variation can occur), are genetically proven to be descendants of a common male ancestor.1 There are several Universities and businesses that currently provide Y-chromosome testing for the purpose of genealogical research. (Listed on the DNA Links page.) After careful consideration we have elected to go with FamilyTree DNA for our research project. This company was founded strictly for performing genealogical DNA testing and analysis. Our contact is Bennett Greenspan who has worked closely with Dr. Michael Hammer of the University of Arizona. Dr. Hammer is a highly respected geneticist who has done much research on the Y-chromosome "Kohanim" project. The test requires a mouth swab sample from each participant. You administer your own test using a swab provided to collect cells from the inside of your cheek. |
